I Want to Believe
written by: SAH
See that poll? I found it on CNN.com (a site that seems to be seeking self parody these days).
I didn’t doctor that image, but I did answer yes. Though probably not how they meant. They didn’t ask whether or not I thought aliens existed (probably, but not necessarily in a Star Trek way) or if aliens are visiting earth (unlikely; but I do like to entertain the possibility). What they asked was, do you believe in unidentified flying objects? Well, then, yes… I do believe there are flying objects that can’t be identified. I’ve seen flying objects I couldn’t identify.
Perhaps it’s just the mood I’m in, but I enjoy the inference of “UFO.” What I’m sure they wanted to know is if people believe in aliens visiting us in space ships. And that implies that a UFO is a space ship. Well, if you’ve identified the flying object as space ship, then it’s not unidentified. It’s an IFO.
Of course that’s unfair, everyone knows UFO = alien space craft, even if that’s not what it stands for (I blame a secret government conspiracy), but still, semantics are fun.
So, I wonder how many of the people who answered the poll answered it as I did, with tongue in cheek.
I also wonder how many of those who answered are aliens.
