Dream of Flying

written by: SAH

"I saw one beast after another," Emmanuel Swedenborg recorded in his dream book for the night of October 19/20 1744, "and they spread their wings and were dragons. I was flying over them. One of them was supporting me."

How does someone dream of flying if they have never flown or been high enough to know what that would look like? How are we able to visualize in our dreams what looking down on familiar surroundings would be like? I suppose we can never know how accurate these dreams are, but their vividness begs the question.

I remember having dreams of flying when I was younger. There is one specific one I remember to this day. I was at the cabin, paddling around the lake. I was using one of those little foam kickboards older people use, or children use when learning to swim. And I angled it upward and took to the sky. I flew around the lake, perhaps 200 feet above the ground. And looking down I could see the lake, my mom, the cabin, our dog. How is that possible? I have never seen any of that from above. And yet I feel very strongly about my dream's accuracy.
