Who is Hotter: Mary Ann or Ginger? Now We know!

written by: Cory Q

Let's face it. Our generation grew up on the cathode ray nipple of television. We were weaned on sitcoms and Saturday morning cartoons. We spent as many hours running around outside making blaster noises behind our X-Wings and say "Nuh-uh, you missed me!" as we did planted in front of the tube watching He-Man and Transformers.

As such, during periods of intellectual development, we had conversations about topics of which we knew. These conversations always contained phrases like "No way can Samantha from Bewitched do better magic than Jeanine, of which I dream." Truly, those were the halcyon days.

There are some of these debates that go down through history as epic, questions that seem to confound the ages as unanswerable. Usually those questions involve feats of incredible strength ("Yes way The Flash can out run Superman") or pubescent fixation. Well, I am here to put one of those debates to bed, right here. Who is hotter: Ginger or Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island"?

What brings this up is a new feature on Flickr that lets one track where any particular picture is receiving view traffic from. According to these statistics, the most viewed picture in the MonekyRiverTown photo stream is this one:

I Know Its Cheesy

I wanted to desperately know why this, of all the thousands of pictures we have posted, was getting an inordinate amount of traffic. Below you will find a chart. This chart is real data. This data was complied on 12-28-07 via Flickr "Stats", and represents the top 19 of 49 search criteria referred from "images.search.yahoo.com". These 19 criteria account for 415 of 465 tracked views of this picture (above), which account for 10% of its total views.

For those who don't know, Ginger was played by Tina Louise, Mary Ann was played by Dawn Wells, and "Lovey" Howell was played by Natalie Schafer. The "Both" column is for searches on both Mary Ann and Ginger. No one searched for Natalie with either of the other girls.

Quantitive proof of hotness

There it is! The data says that more people are looking for pictures of Dawn Wells. A lot more searches in fact were conducted to find pictures of the castaway-next-door than to find the stranded movie star. I believe the conclusion that we can draw from the vast difference in searches is two fold. 1) If you post a picture that gets picked up in a search engine, you will get a lot more views on it and 2) Mary Ann is considered by many to be hotter than Ginger. Why else would people be looking for pictures of her unless they were enamored with her?

So here is to Mary Ann and her verifiable hotness!
