Thieving Monkeys
written by: SAH
More monkey madness from India. I saw this story on Yahoo News.
We knew the monkeys in India were becoming a problem, becoming more and more aggressive toward residents and tourists, but I think they're trying make a little lifestyle upgrade. .
This story reported that they're now "stealing mobile phones and breaking into homes to steal soft drinks from refrigerators..." A sure sign they are after the sweet life if you ask me.
The problem is exacerbated by two ongoing issues. First, "because of shrinking forest cover, monkeys have increasingly moved into cities," and second, "efforts to drive out the animals [are] complicated by the fact that devout Hindus view them as an incarnation of Hanuman, the monkey god who symbolises [sic] strength."
Now, admittedly, it's hard to resists the whims of a monkey god, but come on, maybe he wants you to put him in check? Maybe the proper offerings aren't being made.
Or maybe it's a sad irony that while the authorities won't do anything to harm or severely deter the monkeys themselves, they will think nothing of destroying their home, the forests, in order to find places for more humans. Perhaps the monkey god grows wrathful at the destruction of his home. And if humans are going to continue to take his home away from monkeys, then perhaps it's time the monkeys return the favor.
After all, why would we believe these trespasses would go unpunished? Have intruders ever been welcomed with open arms?
Perhaps the authorities don't increase their efforts because they know, deep down, it's their own fault for leaving monkeys few other options.
Whatever the reason, I hope no one learns their lesson (and I'm confident they won't), because I like stories about thieving monkeys.
