My Monkey's Name is Jennifer, a Review
written by: SAH
I just read the 6-issue mini-series comic book My Monkey's Name is Jennifer. I'm sure you can figure out why I picked it up.
This is one of the oddest tales I've read in comics. It fits into a genre of "odd independent" comics (there is a reason they are independent usually).
The story revolves around a monkey (who I think is actually a chimp) and his (yes, Jennifer is a boy) quest to save "the girl" (who was kind enough to name him Jennifer) to avoid being beaten by "the other ones" (her parents -- who like to hit him and call him a bad monkey).
One day while Jennifer and the girl are playing in the park, she gets kidnapped. And even though Jennifer doesn't really seem to like the girl much (since she names him Jennifer and dresses him in dresses) he figures he should save her to avoid her parents wrath.
Jennifer is one angry monkey. He is constantly thinking threats to those around him and when he finally finds the kidnappers, vows to "tear off their fleshy testicles" and rip out their eyes.
Along the way he meets a skeleton man and some transvestite ninjas.
It's all very strange. And though I don't think I can go so far as to call it bad... I'm not so sure I would call it good either. I'll just say it's interesting.
